welcome letter

Cornerstone Charter Academy-4th Grade

Dear Parents,

We want to welcome you to Fourth Grade! We are excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and we are looking forward to a happy, productive school year!

This is Mrs. Michelle Janosik's 5th year teaching! She has taught 4th and 5th grade in Woodbridge, Virginia prior to moving to Cornerstone Charter. Woodbridge is near Washington DC, so while there she also learned much about our country's capital. She worked for two unique schools in the same county (Prince William County). One was a school of choice, similar to Cornerstone and the other was public. In Woodbridge Mrs. Janosik was a member of the instructional consultant team which means she was able to observe other teachers and assist them with any problems that they had. She earned her degree in elementary education from Penn State University. When Mrs. Janosik is not teaching she enjoys spending time with her family and cheering on Penn State! She tries to stay active, She loves swimming, biking, and softball. She moved to Florida in March of last year and looks forward to many more years teaching in the Sunshine State!

Vickie Santostefano has been teaching for 16 years! She has taught grades 3 - 8, but 4th is her favorite. She has two children and three stepchildren. The only children that currently live with her are her three adorable chihuahuas. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in Elementary Education and a master's degree from Southern Arkansas University in Educational Leadership. Currently she is writing her dissertation which will complete the requirements for her doctorate from the University of Central Florida. She is certified in Elementary Education, Educational Leadership, Exceptional Student Education, Integrated Middle Grades Curriculum, and Middle Grades (5-9) Mathematics.

Students in the 4th grade classes are expected to follow the student code of conduct. You play an important part in making this year a success. We hope you will support our classroom rules and procedures. This year We encourage you to take an active part in your child’s education by signing their daily planners, reading with or to your child daily, and facilitating homework.

This year we will focus on the following curriculum areas:

  • Math (number sense, concepts and operations, measurement, algebraic thinking, geometry, and spatial sense, data analysis and probability)
  • Language Arts (reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking, language, literature)
  • Science (matter, forces in motion, energy, processes that shape earth, processes of life, earth and space, how things interact with the environment, the nature of science)
  • Social Studies (Florida history, time, continuity, change, geography, government, economics)

Homework Policy We will not accept late homework after Friday

Homework will be assigned and written in planners.
Homework will be assigned in math every night Monday through Thursday.
Homework will be assigned in language arts every night Monday through Thursday.
Students will be expected to read 20 minutes every night and record their reading in the planner.
Students will be assigned a composition book.
Projects will be given each month for reading and science/social studies.

You can help your student with homework by establishing a consistent schedule for completing homework.

Help set up a consistent organized place for homework to be done.

Encourage, motivate, and prompt your child, but do not sit with him/her and do the homework for him/her. The purpose of the homework is for you child to practice and use what he/she has learned. If your child is consistently not able to do the homework by him/herself, please contact us.

Although there might be exceptions, the minutes your child spends on homework will be approximately 40-60 minutes each night.
